Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to begin in February 2027. According to the Umm al-Qura calendar, the first fast falls on Monday, 8 February 2027. In India, Pakistan and Bangladesh — where the month begins after the local sighting of the crescent — the first Roza is likely on Tuesday, 9 February 2027. Always follow the announcement of your local Ruet-e-Hilal committee.

Who must fast
Fasting in Ramadan is obligatory (Farz) on every Muslim who is adult, sane and able. Those who are ill, travelling, pregnant or breastfeeding (when fasting would harm them or the child), or women in their menstrual or post-natal period, are excused and make up the missed fasts later. The elderly who cannot fast at all give Fidya — feeding a poor person for each day.
What breaks the fast
- Deliberately eating, drinking or smoking — even a little.
- Anything deliberately taken into the stomach or brain through an open passage.
- Marital relations during the hours of fasting (this also requires Kaffarah).
- Deliberately vomiting a mouthful.
Eating or drinking by genuine forgetfulness does not break the fast — stop as soon as you remember and continue. Brushing without toothpaste, using eye drops, a blood test or swallowing your own saliva do not break the fast according to the Hanafi school.
Sehri and Iftar
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Take Sehri, for in Sehri there is blessing” (Bukhari, Muslim). Sehri should end before the start of Fajr, and it is Sunnah to delay it towards the end of its time. Iftar should be done promptly at sunset, ideally with dates or water. Read our healthy Sehri and Iftar guide for what to eat.
Taraweeh
Taraweeh is a Sunnat-e-Mu’akkadah prayer of 20 rak’at (in the Hanafi school) prayed after Isha every night of Ramadan, in sets of two. Many masjids complete a full recitation (Khatam) of the Qur’an during Taraweeh.
The last ten nights
The final Ashra holds Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power, “better than a thousand months” (Al-Qadr 97:3). It is sought in the odd nights — the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th. Many spend these nights in I’tikaf in the masjid. See our guide to Laylat al-Qadr and Taaq Raat.
Sadaqat al-Fitr and Eid
Sadaqat al-Fitr (Fitrana) is due on every Muslim who owns wealth above the Nisab, on behalf of themselves and their dependent children, and should be given before the Eid prayer so the poor can celebrate too. Eid ul-Fitr is celebrated with Ghusl, new or clean clothes, something sweet before the prayer, and two rak’at of Eid Salah in congregation.
Preparing now
- Fast a few days in Sha’ban, as the Prophet ﷺ did, to build the habit.
- Make up any missed fasts from last year.
- Set a Qur’an reading plan — about 20 pages a day completes it in Ramadan.
- Calculate your Zakat; many prefer to give it in Ramadan.
- Masjid committees: check your siren and sound system before Sehri on day one.
