The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday” (Muslim). Jumu’ah is a Farz prayer for adult men who are resident and healthy, prayed in congregation in place of Dhuhr. Allah says: “O you who believe, when the call is made for prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade” (Al-Jumu’ah 62:9).
What time is Jumu’ah?
Jumu’ah is prayed in Dhuhr time — after the sun passes its zenith. Most masjids hold the Khutbah between 12:30 and 1:45 pm; check your local masjid. Today’s Dhuhr time for your location is on our prayer times page, and Fridays are highlighted in every monthly timetable.
Rak’at of Jumu’ah
| Before Khutbah | Farz (with Imam) | After | After | Nafl |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 Sunnat-e-Mu’akkadah | 2 | 4 Sunnat-e-Mu’akkadah | 2 Sunnah | 2 |
This follows the Hanafi practice. Women, travellers and the sick are not obliged to attend; they pray 4 rak’at of Dhuhr instead.
Etiquette of the Khutbah
- Arrive early — the reward of the first comers is like sacrificing a camel (Bukhari).
- Once the Khutbah starts, listen in silence. Even saying “be quiet” to someone loses the reward of Jumu’ah (Bukhari).
- Do not step over people’s shoulders to reach the front.
Sunnahs of Friday
- Ghusl — see the method of Ghusl.
- Wear clean, preferably white clothes, apply ‘Itr (for men) and use Miswak.
- Recite Surah Al-Kahf — a light will shine for you between the two Fridays (Hakim, Bayhaqi).
- Send abundant Durood on the Prophet ﷺ — use the Tasbeeh counter.
- Make Dua, especially in the last hour before Maghrib, an hour in which Dua is accepted.
