Work out Sadaqat al-Fitr for your whole family at today’s local price of wheat, barley, dates or raisins — and give it before the Eid prayer.
Who must give Sadaqat al-Fitr?
According to the Hanafi school, Sadaqat al-Fitr is Wajib on every Muslim who, on the morning of Eid al-Fitr, owns wealth equal to the Nisab beyond his basic needs — for himself and for his young children. It is due from dawn on the day of Eid and should be given before the Eid prayer; giving it earlier in Ramadan is permitted and helps the poor prepare for Eid.
The Prophet ﷺ made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and as food for the poor (Abu Dawud 1609). According to the Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools, a full Sa‘ (about 2.5–3 kg) of the local staple food is given for each person.
Measures differ slightly between fatwa bodies; follow the amount announced by your local scholars. Calculate your annual Zakat with the Zakat calculator.
