How Zakat is calculated
Zakat is 2.5% (one-fortieth) of the wealth you have owned for a full lunar year, once it is at or above the Nisab — the value of 612.36 g of silver or 87.48 g of gold. Personal items such as your home, car, clothes and household goods are exempt. Using the silver Nisab is the more cautious opinion and is widely followed in the Hanafi school.
